New York, NY (October 2009) – The Forbes Galleries are pleased to host the exhibition The Vintage Woman: A Century of Costume Jewelry in America, 1910-2010, which features the Laurie Bogart Morrow Collection of vintage costume jewelry. This unique and extensive collection celebrates a century of costume jewelry design as well as the women who wear it.  On display are masterpieces by legendary designers Elsa Schiaparelli, Hattie Carnegie, Marcel Boucher and his wife, Sandra, and the world-renowned Kenneth Jay Lane, who has been designing for over 60 years.

“Costume jewelry’s heyday coincided with the Great Depression, as the economic woes forced master jewelers to substitute glass for gemstones, pot metal for gold,” Laurie Morrow writes in the exhibition’s companion book The Vintage Woman, to be published in 2010. “Crafted in times remarkably relevant to today, the story of costume jewelry can be a lesson to us all as well as a testament to the strong women whose patronage supported these treasures.”

In addition to the magnificently crafted pieces on display, the show also highlights fashion photographer Rob Van Petten’s portraits of famous women and models wearing costume jewelry from the exhibition.  His photographs aim to capture the inner beauty of these vintage pieces and the women who wear them.

Commenting on the exhibition, Forbes Vice Chairman Christopher (“Kip”) Forbes said, "The elegant pieces on display in this exhibition prove that creative genius isn't dependent on carat content to dazzle and delight."

The Vintage Woman is on view at The Forbes Galleries now through February 13, 2010. The Galleries are free and open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursdays are reserved for unguided group tours and reservations can be made by calling 212.206.5549.
